Several years ago my sister sent for me, and when I...
Several years ago my sister sent for me, and when I reached her home I found her little daughter, about six years of age, ill and in bed. At the first glance it appeared to be a case of jaundice. My sister was just becoming interested in Christian Science, so she asked me to treat the child. Previous to accepting Christian Science, she had treated the children's minor ailments according to the rules of a homeopathic doctor's book, and she said that the child's symptoms seemed even worse than those described in the book.
After treating the child awhile, I read aloud to her from "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. She seemed too young to understand it, but I knew that many others besides myself had been healed by reading that book, and I felt sure it would help her, should my own understanding not be sufficient to meet the case. After awhile I asked her if she would like me to read to her from another book, but she said, "No, I want you either to treat me or read to me from Science and Health."
The child seemed to know where the healing was to come from. It was a little after noon when I reached there, and about evening when I left, and all of the time was spent in treatment or in reading from the text-book; yet I was almost discouraged, for she seemed nearly as bad as when I found her. But I went resolutely home, knowing that though I was not with her, God was still there. I continued to work for her at intervals until I went there again about nine the next morning. On my way there the thought kept coming that no matter what the appearance might be, it is God who does the work, and He will not leave her. Her little sister opened the door for me, and with eyes dancing said, "I've a surprise for you upstairs." Sure enough, there was the sister dressed and walking about the room. She still seemed a little weak and did not attend school that day, but every symptom of the disease had disappeared and did not return.
