Our friend asks, "If disease exists only in the mind,...

Dayton (O.) Herald

Our friend asks, "If disease exists only in the mind, why recognize disease, quarantine, or board of health?" The Christian Scientist has no fear of spreading disease, but inasmuch as there are many people who do believe that certain diseases are contagious, out of respect to this class it is right and proper, in order to allay their fear, to report contagious diseases to the board of health. The practitioner of medicine and the Christian Science practitioner are aware of the baneful effects of fear, especially of a contagious disease; therefore everything should be done to allay one of the great foes of the human race, namely, fear. For this reason most people in our country believe in quarantine. If the body experiences no pain where there is no mind, and does suffer when conscious of having a mind, then the mental condition must enter largely into what is called human suffering.

The statement, "There is no physical science," is only part of a sentence. (See Science and Health, p. 127.) If our friend had carefully read the entire paragraph in which it occurs, he would have found that it explains itself. The word "Science" used in this paragraph has reference to "divine Mind," or "Truth," and truth is spiritual and not physical. There is a Principle to be understood in Christian Science, and until one does understand this Principle it would be better not to attempt an explanation of the subject. The phenomena of sin, sickness, suffering, and death are very real to the human sense of things, but will disappear when man is governed by the Science of God's unalterable law as taught and demonstrated by Christ Jesus.

Hundreds of thousands of people who have been healed through Christian Science had first given the laws of health and rules of hygiene a trial, but failing to regain their health thereby, they turned to Christian Science and were healed through a correct understanding of Jesus' words, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." In reply to another inquiry, we desire to say that many eminent judges, lawyers, business men, some regularly graduated physicians and ordained ministers of the gospel, testify that the teachings of Christian Science are both consistent and Christian when rightly understood.
