FROM OUR EXCHANGES

[Rev. Harry Westbrook Reed in Universalist Leader.]

The popular belief has made it difficult for man to understand the true relation between heaven and true religion. The conception has been based on the old idea that religion is of this world and heaven the next. Those who have made religion a part of their human experience will not question the heaven of love, the heaven of faith, and the heaven of true piety. If a generous impulse or a noble thought come to a man, and he gives some expression to them, he asks for no "better hold on heaven" for having done this; but realizes that they have made for themselves a heaven in his own soul, and the more he contemplates it the more he knows that he has given nothing and has received much. This strikes at the heart of the compensation of Christian service, which is inevitably and vitally connected with the service itself. Heaven is our reward not for our righteousness, but by our righteousness.

[Rev. R. J. Campbell, M.A., in Christian Commonwealth.]
