Christian Science came to me through a lady's lending...
Christian Science came to me through a lady's lending me a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. I spent a great deal of time reading it, for I was then very unhappy, being bound by a great many material beliefs. I had concentrated my thought on them so much that they were very tenacious and real to me, and although I knew that Christian Science was the truth, yet I could not rise above the mental state of despondency and fear that had been with me ever since I can remember. It is now over two years since I seemingly passed through a great trouble and sense of separation, but through the steadfastness of a faithful practitioner I was enabled to rise above it. I was greatly comforted in pondering over the story of Abraham and Isaac, and as I turned to Genesis (chapter 22) I saw that his answer to God was, "Here I am," as though he was dwelling in the belief of material separation; but farther on his reply is, "Here am I," which to me seemed to imply that he had risen above the material belief and that his consciousness was in Spirit, Mind. Knowing that God and His thoughts cannot be separated, this ray of light was a great help to me. Since then I have passed through deep waters, but whenever things have failed, I know the fault has been always with myself and not with the Principle I long to demonstrate.
I should like to tell of a recent demonstration. I was trying to get something from a large refrigerator, and had my arm inside when the heavy lid fell forward on it. For the moment I felt I could not move it, but I immediately repeated the scientific statement of being, and then the thought from our text-book came to me, "Your Mind-remedy is safe and sure" (p. 384), and I felt relief at once. I was able to return to the tea-table without any one's knowing of the incident, but later in the evening, when alone, I had to work against the evidence of stiffness and discoloration, and by the following day this was entirely overcome.
Last winter I had a very painful foot, and in addition to the pain it became very much swollen. I tried to overcome the condition by working to the best of my understanding in Christian Science, but it seemed to get worse and I began to be full of fear. I knew then that I needed help from one who was in the opposite condition of thought, so I wrote to a practitioner for treatment. The trouble did not yield at once, but after a few weeks the pain was very much less, and with about three weeks' more treatment the pain and swelling had entirely disappeared, though one of the nails was quite discolored. Last September, while on my holidays, my daughter and I took a walking tour round the Isle of Wight, and while on this tour the toe-nail dropped off, and a new one has now appeared. While having treatment for my foot I was able to follow my usual occupation, which is that of housekeeper in a large business house, and no one in the house knew of my condition.
