When God led me to Christian Science, about a year and...
When God led me to Christian Science, about a year and a half ago, I was to sense in a wretched condition. I had been ill for five years; the trouble had begun with a serious anemic condition, to which a severe stomach disorder was added. I was sick mentally and physically, and according to the statement of the physicians there was not a single healthy spot in my body. Today it hardly seems possible to me that a human being could go through so much as I then did. During the five years of my illness all that was possible had been done in a material way to restore my health, but I became so low that I had to lie down part of the time and would creep around the rest of it.
I was told that only an operation could deliver me from my trouble. The physician had already fixed the day when I should come, so that there were but a few days left before the operation. Never in my life did I pray so much as during that time. It was not so much the fear of death as of getting still more miserable and becoming entirely a burden to my poor old parents, as through the expenses occasioned by my long illness we had become very poor; so I prayed to God with all my heart, and suddenly I knew something would come that would improve my condition. I felt that God did not will my suffering. Such a feeling of contentment came over me,--I felt as if all the fulness of divine Love was being showered upon me, and I was in constant expectation of something good. Two days later doubt seemed to reassert itself, but I went out of doors, and there the good came which God sent me.
A lady whom I did not know spoke to me, and told me of Christian Science. Through her kind intercession I went to a Christian Science practitioner, who helped me faithfully. I can never in my life forget the impression I received at my first call at the practitioner's and the first time I attended the service. My illness had made me a bitter woman, who took no interest in the affairs of life, who had become inaccessible, and believed herself despised and hated. With great patience the lady helped me to put off these peculiarities of disposition, and this is the greatest joy of my parents. I am a changed woman, so I am often told by friends and acquaintances. One trouble after another disappeared. In the measure that I applied the teachings of truth, I felt the change toward good. My strength increased; the stomach and the bowels slowly resumed their natural functions; my appetite, which had always been very poor, became normal, and the especially tormenting sleeplessness has been turned into restful sleep.
