[Written for the Sentinel.]

THE GREAT PARENTAGE

As flowers growing each on separate stalk,
Yet springing from a common soil, so we
Root deep in God, tho' near our lives may walk
The jealous years. Nor time nor tears must see
Our Soul-flower blighted. Variously we bloom,
The while the gardener shapes and prunes each one
Tow'rd possible perfection, making room
That all may turn their faces to the sun.

And if He choose for thee a pattern small,
Look to its color and its fair outline;
Or to its perfume sweet, if it should fall
That unto thee he given a large design.
Thus, drawing Truth's own essence in its flow
From this great parentage, each blossom free
Attaining full maturity shall show
Mind's pure reflection to humanity.
