I desire to express through the Sentinel my gratitude for...
I desire to express through the Sentinel my gratitude for what Christian Science has done and is doing for me. It has been almost six years that I have studied it, or at least have been interested in the facts that Christian Science explains, the truths which are applicable to our needs today, even as Jesus taught. Christ Jesus demonstrated that the understanding of Truth, divine Principle, made healing possible to all. He said: "And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues." Mrs. Eddy says in Science and Health p. 243, "The same 'Mind... which was also in Christ Jesus' must always accompany the letter of Science in order to confirm and repeat the ancient demonstrations of prophets and apostles."
In my own experience, an appetite for liquor has been overcome by the reading of Science and Health alone; and the continued reading, with the aid of different practitioners, has lifted my thought above the appetite for tobacco. Although raised by parents whose characters were unquestioned, I was addicted to profanity. After entering college I became very careless and rapidly went down, indulging in gambling and the dissipations which are usually associated therewith. When Christian Science found me, I certainly needed its help. My healing seemed slow and came by deep experiences. This healing was not accomplished through will-power, but a desire for good has come to me by the understanding of God as revealed in Christian Science, and has naturally and steadily raised me into a higher, grander sense of the privilege of living, in the very midst of what heretofore was enticing.
My physical condition gradually became better as my mentality was corrected by the truth. A bad temper, which led me at times to do things of which I would afterward be ashamed, also a suicidal tendency, have been overcome, besides a fear of hell. This hell of brimstone, as yet preached in some of the churches, with an unmerciful devil, was firmly believed in, also that I was a candidate for it without solicitation and with no possible chance of escape. Much fear has been overcome by the continuous reading of our text-book, together with the Bible; so that a greater sense of freedom now fills my heart. Christian Science to me means much, as it no doubt does to all who are experiencing the regeneration it calls forth. Certainly these are the "signs" which the Scripture declares will follow. That God is Life has been demonstrated to me.
