[Written for the Sentinel.]

"JOHN YOUNG OF EDINBURGH"*

IT was well said, John Young,
And history hath approved thy sturdy tongue.
When proud theology was wont to preach
God made all things; He is the Sire of each,
Thy plain philosophy rebelled, and cried
God is the father of mind, and naught beside!
Though, like that other John, thou did'st appear
A voice upon a desert of despair,
Thy words, as bread upon the waters flung,
Were bravely spoke, John Young!
