Healing in Christian Science is the attempt to demonstrate...

Healing in Christian Science is the attempt to demonstrate in the world today the practical effects of grasping the meaning of that great saying of Christ Jesus, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." The more a man knows of Truth, the more he necessarily knows of God, and the less real, of equal necessity, does evil become to him. Healing, consequently, to be worthy of the name, must destroy in the human consciousness the mental germs which produce sin, disease, and death, and which were catalogued by Paul as the works of the flesh, and it must do this substituting for them the fruits of the Spirit.

This is why Jesus demanded of the scribes, "Whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and walk?" and this is why Mrs. Eddy has written, on page 366 of Science and Health: "In order to cure his patient, the metaphysician must first cast moral evils out of himself and thus attain the spiritual freedom which will enable him to cast physical evils out of his patient." Christian Science healing, in short, is not effected by a mental effort directed at a particular moment to suggest thoughts of health to another human mind; it is accomplished through days and weeks and years of a struggle to know God so completely as to realize the absolute nothingness of sorrow and sickness and sin, when the sufferers from these ask to be healed of them. "For their sakes," Jesus said, "I sanctify myself." The kingdom of God, in short, never came to any human being through hypnotic suggestion; it comes through the gradual destruction of sin, of the belief in everything that is unlike God, in the human consciousness, which brings with it "the peace of God, which passeth all understanding."
