[Written for the Sentinel.]

"REVELATION."

A heav'nly  yearning rises in my heart
To pierce beyond the shifting veil of sense,
To see all Thou beholdest, all Thou art,
To know what underlies this frail pretense.

Then, open Thou mine eyes full wide and clear,
Let not my gaze be dimmed with earthly fear;
So may mine ears catch the celestial sounds
With which Thy Spirit universe abounds.

The fulness of Thy joy surroundeth me!
O grant me ears to hear and eyes to see;
Unfailing strength to follow and obey,
And childlike yielding to Thy loving sway.

So shall my lips break into sacred song,
And tranquilize earth's dismal cry of wrong;
Dispel the load of doubt and fear and care,
And rouse the ringing echoes ev'rywhere!
