Our critic objects to Mrs. Eddy's teaching that God and His creation, being spiritual, cannot include materiality. It is true that the first chapter of Genesis contains the statement that "God created the heaven and the earth," but there is nothing in this Scriptural record of creation which justifies the conclusion that God created a material heaven and earth. The theory that the universe is material and is evolved from atoms is man-made; it does not proceed from the God who made all that is and pronounced it good.

Our critic also objects to Mrs. Eddy's teaching that God is Life and Life is God; yet Jesus, who came to teach the will of God, said: "I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly;" "Whosoever liveth and believeth in me [the Son of God] shall never die;" "God is not a God of the dead, but of the living;" showing that he regarded God (his Father) as the source of being, and that immortality depended upon believing or understanding that God is Life.

Mrs. Eddy does not, as our critic implies, simply dismiss pain and disease by saying that they are unreal. A study of Science and Health will disclose the teaching that while pain and disease seem perfectly real to human sense, they are not eternal and therefore must be destructible. It is through the destruction of pain and disease, as Jesus destroyed them, that Christian Scientists are proving that in the best sense of the word they are unreal because not Godlike.
