It is my duty and pleasure to bear witness to the help...
It is my duty and pleasure to bear witness to the help that Christian Science has been to me and mine. Twelve years ago I tried to read the Christian Science text-book; but it was a sealed book to me, and after repeated attempts I gave it up as not worth while. Some years later there began for me a siege of nervous exhaustion, involving intense suffering in the right arm and side as well as in the eyes. This lasted two years, depressing me to the point of desire for self-destruction.
Failing to find relief in any other way, I applied to a Christian Science practitioner for help. She soon uncovered to me the most important mistake I was making in my habits of thinking, and before long her help brought me out of the horror into sane and useful living. Still I did not grasp the real point in the teaching of Christian Science. After that an injured knee, which had kept troubling me in the most obstinate fashion for a year or more, became normal after a few weeks' treatment. All this time my good friend had been giving without charge many hours out of her busy days, trying to explain to me the questions in Christian Science which I could not reconcile with my preconceived notions. Meanwhile many a practical problem had been solved, many an ache and pain had been banished, instep plates were abandoned, and even the symptoms of contagious diseases had been remarkably lightened.
Christian Science had proved itself a friend in need, but still a friend very little understood. Finally we had in our family a case of severe illness, and found to our dismay that the old belief in the reality of two worlds, a world of matter fully as real and eternal as a world of Spirit, was still with us. The time had come to make a decision once for all—to accept Christ's application of spiritual law to all things, or to limit it to the realm of the unseen. With all our hearts we now wanted to understand, and because of our "importunity" we saw, I believe for the first time, the teachings of Jesus in their true light. We saw that there is only one reality, the divine Principle of harmony and its manifestation. This vision of reality grows brighter daily, thank God, and we see more clearly every day how to apply the new light to every practical detail of life, — to our social intercourse, to business, and, most useful of all, to the bringing up of our children.
