It is incorrect to aver that "Christian Science says that people make themselves well by refusing to think they can be ill." Were this so, Christian Science would be little else than autosuggestion, whereas the two are in fact polar opposites. Christian Scientists refuse to think they can be ill; not blindly or unreasonably, but because they have learned something of the truth that has shown such thinking to be erroneous and profitless. When through the study of Christian Science the omnipresence and infinite love of God have ceased to be mere words or religious dogma, and present themselves to an awakened consciousness as the verity and reality of existence, the inevitable corresponding result is the dwindling away of the material concept of reality and the consequent vanishing of the dis cord born of such a concept and apparent in the form of sin, sickness, and misery.

The student of Christian Science gains a little of that understanding which is "a wellspring of life unto him that hath it," and learns that the "good news" of Christianity is salvation, not as a condition of happiness he has to die to attain, but as a release from all that harasses and oppresses him here and now.
