Battle Creck (Mich.) Enquirer

In an article entitled "Truth and Error," which appeared in a recent issue of the Enquirer, the writer, having referred to Christian Science as a "beautiful half truth," desires to be noted "as first commending the good in it" before taking issue with what he does not understand and therefore condemns as error. We are thankful for the credit given Christian Science, and will endeavor to correct the misapprehension yet remaining. Speaking of "half truths" may remind us that we used to hear of "white lies." As a child I was puzzled over the difference between "white lies" and any other kind of wrong stories, and I am glad to say that I have never been able to see any reason for making concessions to "white lies" or "half truths."

To the true Christian, of whatever creed, a thing is either true or false,—there is no half way position. Christian Science is not a half truth. It declares that God is Truth, and that His Word, as taught and demonstrated by Christ Jesus, is the foundation of Christian Science. When the text-book of Christian Science, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, is read and studied from the author's point of view, viz., that of the spiritual universe, including man, every statement therein will be found to be true.

Should an ignorant person assert that the sciences of mathematics and of electricity are but partial truths, because of the misapprehension of the speaker concerning the rules which govern them, the fact that they are exact science would not be changed ; and thus it is with Christian Science. Our critical friend takes issue with Christian Science because we do not admit that "suggestion" is the modus operandi by which its healing work is accomplished. It is related that ages ago, a certain king made the same denial of God's power, and produced wizards to perform the wonders which Aaron did in response to God's command; but the climax came when Aaron's rod swallowed up those of the wizards, and those persons were compelled to admit to Pharaoh that the works of Aaron were done by the finger of God.
