It is now almost twenty-five years since I was healed in Christian Science. November, 1884, found me living in South Ryegate, Vt. I was a helpless sufferer from a sixth attack of rheumatism,—confined to an invalid's chair and very much crippled and unable to move. The lady with whom I boarded, told me of a friend who had been healed by "faith-cure," or something like that. Although I did not then realize what was prompting me to do so, I asked if she would write and find out more about what had healed her friend. She wrote to the lady, who in reply sent a copy of The Christian Science Journal, in which I found numerous references to the "text-book," "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. So my husband sent for this book, and when it came it was the twelfth edition, in two volumes.
The first thing I read was a testimonial in the back of the book, given by a man living in Washington, D. C., who had been healed by reading this book of illness the same as that from which I suffered. I had my landlady write him, to ask if this was true, and he answered that it was true, and that I could be healed also, by reading the book. This gave me a little more confidence, for I had never heard anything about Christian Science. I felt this man was no more to God than I, and if He had healed him He would hear my prayer also. At first I found great difficulty in reading, as my fingers were so stiffened that I could not turn the pages; but I persevered, and in a little while my fingers relaxed sufficiently for me to do so. With this gain came a little more understanding of the truth, and in less than a week I could move my hands, and soon was able to rise from my chair without assistance. On Christmas day I combed my own hair for the first time in six months. My joy may be imagined when I discovered that I could wait upon myself!
Mrs. Eddy says in Science and Health that a mother's thoughts "form the embryo of another mortal mind, and unconsciously mold it" (p. 236). I had a little daughter, then three years of age, who had curvature of the spine. She had been examined by three prominent physicians in Kansas City, Mo., who had advised us to take her to Boston or New York to be fitted with a brace, as she could not walk across the floor without falling. I immediately began to tell her that those falls could not hurt her, that she could jump and play just as much as the other children. Soon she began to say, if she had fallen, "Mamma, that didn't hurt baby," which proved that my fear that the fall would harm her was disappearing. I examined her at various times, and found that her spine was straightening out. By February she and I were perfectly well, having been absolutely healed by the power of divine Love, by the truth that makes free.
