My father was a physician, and from early childhood...

My father was a physician, and from early childhood I was trained up in strict accordance with the asserted laws of physiology and hygiene, so that for nearly forty years of my life I considered them almost sacred. My parents undoubtedly believed that my life, when I was a child, had been saved by adherence to these aforesaid rules and teachings; but in spite of their own faithful observance, they at times suffered much from ill health, and I also found myself a victim of continual stomach and bowel trouble. For more than twenty years I used, one after another, most of the various remedies known to physicians for the above trouble, but with no lasting benefit.

For several years past I have been studying and endeavoring to practise the rules of Christian Science, as found in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, and the trouble of so many years' standing has disappeared. I am also healthier and stronger than when striving to live in obedience to the rules of hygiene, physiology, and medicine. I believe in progress, and as I have found Christian Science to be the better way, I feel that I have a right to say that there is no need of knowledge of physiology, hygiene, or medicine in the practice of Christian Science; for a knowledge of "the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus" is a different matter altogether, and has nothing to do with material belief or practice.
