Four years ago I gained my first knowledge of Christian Science

Four years ago I gained my first knowledge of Christian Science. I had been suffering from serious kidney trouble, and had been given up to die, not only by our home physicians but also by some of the best specialists in the country. Everything in a material way was done for me, except an operation, which I was too weak to stand; in fact, the specialist told my husband to take me home to die, which was something I did not want to do; so I insisted on going to California. In February, 1904, we started for Pasadena, and upon arriving there were taken to the home of a Christian Scientist, although not aware of this fact. After we had been there about three weeks, the lady told my husband that I could be cured, and I threw away my medicine and began the treatment. I improved from the first, and in September came back to my Illinois home, well and strong.

After a year or so I became disobedient to Truth, did not listen to the "still small voice," and the fall of 1906 and winter of 1907 found me with a weight of worry and disease on my hands. I kept getting worse, and finally the physicians were called in. Those good men did all in their power for me, but once again it was said that I could not live. All through the night of May 29, 1907, the nurse sat by my bed telling me to breathe, and the next morning my earthly existence seemed limited to only a few minutes; but when the dear ones gathered around my cot I was roused to fight for my life. A Chicago practitioner was sent for, and he came to Streator and stayed over Sunday with me. When he told me that in Christ, Truth, was my life, it seemed as if my imprisoned sense was set free. A Christian Science nurse was procured, and I was given absent treatment, the practitioner coming to see me again just two weeks after the first visit. My rapid gain in health and strength has been wonderful.

I thank God even for having been, as it were, "whipped back into line," for it has made me a better woman, and my prayer is that I may ever hold this thought: "To infinite, ever-present Love, all is Love, and there is no error, no sin, sickness, nor death" (Science and Health, p. 567).
