FROM OUR EXCHANGES

[Rev. Malcolm Taylor in The Churchman.]

Our modern society is complex, and as never before the welfare of each individual is dependent on the character of others, and each has a power over other lives which he holds in trust. The typical modern sinner is the man who is false to this trust—who uses it to foster personal ends. Thus a man, scorning dishonesty in any private matter, may be a thief without leaving his office chair; a corporation of Christian men, who would be horrified at the thought of murder, may hold property where the flagrant violation of sanitary conditions causes the sacrifice of innocent lives. The difficulty of the situation lies in the fact that the sinner does not recognize that he is personally to blame; for, dividing the responsibility with others, he does not come in personal touch with the wrong he has done.
