Calumet (Ill.) Index

To an observing person it is evident that the spirit of the age is against the use of medicine. To those who have not thought the matter over such a statement as the above seems preposterous—even silly. The use of medicine has been universal and from time immemorial; and for any one to advocate the breaking away from the custom seems revolutionary. Nevertheless the break is coming, and the indications of it are on every hand.

There are the Christian Scientists and the mental healers. Few will maintain that there is not something at least in the position taken by these people. Then there is a growing sentiment against the use of drugs. Leading magazines and newspapers are making sentiment against their use and refuse to advertise them in their columns. Others will fall in line as fast as they can make up their minds to dispense with the income from the advertising of drugs. The homeopathic school of medicine is opposed to the use of drugs or strong medicines. The osteopathic doctors use no internal remedies whatever.

This movement against the use of medicine has had its drawbacks. There have been the errors and extravagances of overzealous followers, and the fraud of charlatans, who take advantage of the advantages the movement offers to impose on the credulous and ignorant.
