Our dear Leader has said, "Who hath not learned that...
Our dear Leader has said, "Who hath not learned that when alone, he has his own thoughts to guard, and when struggling with mankind, his temper, and in society, his tongue?" (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 126). How helpful these words are to us in our daily work, for many times we have a struggle with mankind and need to guard our temper. The world is full of people holding different opinions, and from this has resulted many forms of religion. For many years I was a follower of one of these religions, and received much good, for it taught me many of the beautiful lessons of the Bible, which made me want to know more about God and to obey His commandments. These teachings made me a better boy, for they taught me to do right.—to be honest and love the truth. For all the blessings which I received through this church I am very grateful, but as time went on, my health seemed to fail me, and I was stricken with a disease which brought me to the brink of the grave. I thought much of the beautiful promises of the Scriptures which I had heard read in my church, but they did not give me the health for which I was earnestly striving. I went to a physician, and he did what he could for me, but with no good result; and when, after trying five physicians, I still grew worse, death stared me in the face.
As a last resort I tried Christian Science, and in a very short time my health returned, and all the blessed promises of the Scriptures became a reality to me when I found myself well. This new-old religion did not take away any of the truths which I had been taught in my church, it only gave me a better understanding of them. Christian Science made them a living reality to me; it gave a Principle and rule whereby I could demonstrate with certainty that "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble." It taught me that "the prayer of faith" does "save the sick;" that we shall know the truth, and the truth shall make us free; that we should not be overcome of evil, but should overcome evil with good; that we should let that same Mind be in us "which was also in Christ Jesus." Science and Health says (p. 426) that "sin brought death, and death will disappear with the disappearance of sin."
As one takes up the study of Christian Science, he finds that he loses nothing good. Because Christian Scientists think differently from the physicians, this does not make them at variance with each other. We all are working for the uplifting of humanity and to relieve suffering and distress. The physician looks to matter for the cause and cure of disease, while the Christian Scientist regards the carnal mind, which is "enmity against God," as the source of disease. We know by actual experience that we have found a better way in Christian Science, and no one would wish to deprive us of this blessing, for we have found that Christian Science heals when other methods fail. I know from experience that I still love the churches for the good they are doing, and also the physicians, and I know that Christian Science is not at strife with either, but is only laboring to relieve mankind of its false beliefs and suffering, and is striving to bring us all into "the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ."—August Kranert, McGregor, Ia.
