Love and gratitude have much to tell, but are often...
Love and gratitude have much to tell, but are often speechless, not knowing how to express themselves; and thus it is that I find myself unable to say what I would. But, as I think of our beloved Leader's unceasing labor of love, her unflinching courage under every difficulty, her patience and endurance, I thank God and go on my way rejoicing. I first heard of Christian Science in 1890, when a friend came from the West to Greensburg, and hearing of my condition, visited me. I told her of my troubles, which were many, and I shall never forget her loving words as she told me that I could be healed and without medicine—that God would heal me. She gave me a copy of The Christian Science Journal which she had with her, and I promised I would read it. I have never parted with it, as it was my first reading of Christian Science. My friend also said that she was going to have the Lessons from the Quarterly read every Sunday at the home of a lady who had become interested in Christian Science, and she invited me to attend. I went to the meeting, and words fail me to express my gratitude for the truth that I received. I soon procured a copy of Science and Health, and the Bible and the "little book" were my strength and stay day and night in passing through deep and dark waters.
Through the study of Science and Health I am a living monument to the healing power of Truth. By studying this book and applying its teachings as I grasped the spiritual understanding, I was healed after many physicians had failed to help me. I had suffered from heart and lung trouble. I was much reduced in weight, and coughed a great deal; in short, I was a physical wreck. As I studied the text-book I began to improve in general health and also gained in weight, and later I found I had been healed of all my former sufferings, except the extreme fear and the cough, which did not then leave me entirely. Later on, I had class instruction from one of Mrs. Eddy's students; and one day, when the fear was very great, I sent my teacher word. I knew when she received the word, for I was healed instantaneously—all fear and the cough had left me. I arose from the chair and said to a Scientist who was stopping with me, "I am healed! I am healed!" Since I first heard of Christian Science I have never used medicine or material remedies of any kind, but the Science of Truth has been my remedy at all times and under all conditions. I would say to one and all, Come, see, and taste! God is indeed "a present help" in every time of need.
Prior to my healing in Christian Science I went from one physician to another; they did all they could to help me, but the relief was only temporary. One doctor told my husband he expected to hear of my death at any time. Another said that unless I had an operation performed there was nothing more could be done for me. The last doctor I had advised me not to take medicine of any kind, for I had taken too much already. I tried homeopathy, allopathy, electricity, everything I heard of in those many years of suffering. Christian Science has lifted me out of the deepest darkness and suffering that any mortal could come through. I shall never forget the glorious revelation, and the spiritual uplifting that came to me as I studied Science and Health,—the realization that God is our Life and our strength. Since then I have had many proofs of the ever-presence of divine Love, and although the way has at times been steep and rough, my every need has been met. Strengthened with this assurance of the Father's watchful care, I have pressed onward, and I have been able to meet and banish the discords which manifest themselves, for which I am most sincerely thankful. Not only am I able to help myself, but through the understanding of the allness of God which I have gained from the teachings of our Leader, I have been permitted to be the humble instrument of God's mercy whereby many others have been healed of divers diseases.
