With a heart full of gratitude I wish to acknowledge...
With a heart full of gratitude I wish to acknowledge what the study of the Bible, as interpreted through the teaching of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, has done for me and my little family. So wonderful have been the demonstrations that I scarcely know where to begin. I took up the study of Science and Health before I was married, and had many fine demonstrations of Truth's power. After that time, though my husband never opposed me, my progress was slow. I did not work as I should, and something seemed to hold me back. Then came the demand. "Choose you this day whom ye will serve." I responded with a determination to serve God the best I could by daily putting into practice what I had read, studied, and understood. The earnest desire brought many blessings, and Truth has rewarded me most abundantly by pouring into thought the spiritual understanding of His Word as I have never felt it before. These spiritual thoughts of Truth and Love have not come by merely wishing for them, but through an earnest desire and inward striving hourly to know the truth that makes free,—which brings us to a loving Father "whom to know aright is Life eternal" (Science and Health, Pref., p. vii.).
The way has been straight and narrow, and oftentimes so dark that not a ray of light could be seen; but a gentle voice would whisper, "What is that to thee? follow thou me;" and again the way would be opened up. Thus it has ever been all through my journey from darkness into light, and it proves to me without questioning that the loving Father will never leave or forsake us if we will but trust Him as a little child and listen for the "still, small voice." Through Christian Science I have learned how to be humble, have found out who is my brother, and been taught how to love my neighbor as myself.
During all this time I had never discussed Christian Science with my husband. The thought came to me that I should let him alone, and that he would be all right. One afternoon last winter (1907), our little boy had to sense a very high fever; heretofore a doctor had always been called, but this time my husband took the child in his arms, and said, "I will hold him while you write to a Christian Science practitioner in Chicago to treat him." He noted the time of the probable arrival of the letter, and the little one was instantly healed. A sense of the presence of Truth and Love filled the entire house, for we were beginning to live the life that is of God.
