In reading the testimonies in the Sentinel and Journal...
In reading the testimonies in the Sentinel and Journal I am reminded of my own experience in coming to Christian Science. In 1903 I noticed that my hearing was affected, and later on it became so bad that I could not hear ordinary conversation. I went to one of the leading eye and ear specialists, who told me that I could not very well regain the hearing I had lost, but could protect what was left. This was not satisfactory to me, and in the mean time my case got worse, so that I could hardly hear anything at times. I had learned of Christian Science through my sister, who had received some benefit through studying it. I concluded to try it and took treatment ; but owing to the fact that I was not willing to do as the practitioner directed me, I could not see at the end of three months that I was improved. I discontinued the treatments and went back to materia medica, until I was fully convinced that I could not be helped by man-made remedies. In 1905 I sent for the text-book, Science and Health, and this was the best investment I ever made in my life. I read it carefully, and I found that it was exactly, what I was looking for. I studied it for about three months, then went to a Christian Scientist; and this time I was fully convinced that I would be healed. I began treatment in September, 1905, and was almost entirely healed in one week, although I continued treatment for several months. After I was well my friends would ask, "Do you hear all right again?" My reply was that I had found the truth, and the truth had made me free; that I had also found the pearl of great price, and that it was rising daily in value with me.
My mother was also healed by this truth. She had been an invalid since 1884. We had paid out hundreds of dollars for medical treatment, but she got well in a short time by Christian Science treatment. My brother-in-law was saved from the grave. He had seven different doctors and preparation and already been made for his death, but at this point Christian Science healed him. To-day he is in good health, his healing having occurred in the spring of 1905. If any one has reason to be grateful for the truth, I have, for what I received can never be repaid in money. My case was entirely hopeless from the material standpoint. I am thankful for the truth that Mrs. Eddy has revealed to the world, the understanding of what life really is. If any one wants further explanation about my case I will gladly give it. I not only believe, but I know that deafness can be destroyed by Truth,—that truth which heals the sick and reclaims the sinner as well now as in Jesus' time, and by the same method, by understanding that God's power is all.—John T. Neu, Bellevue, Ia.
