In February, 1905, Christian Science was brought to my attention by my sister-in-law, who lives in Brooklyn, N. Y. She was not aware that I was seriously ill at this time, but hearing that I was soon to undergo an operation she wrote, requesting me to do nothing further in the matter until I heard from her again. In the mean time she had sent to the Christian Science Reading Room, asking that a practitioner be sent to my house at once. When he arrived he found me in a very critical condition. I had lung trouble, besides all the old ailments; I had been unable to sleep night or day for several weeks, and consequently suffered very much. The doctor had told my nurse that my heart was very weak and had left a stimulant for me. I was not able to eat solid food at all, and I weighed only eighty-seven pounds. The practitioner treated me Thursday afternoon and again Friday morning. The doctor told the nurse that I was very sick woman, and if she saw the slightest change in me to send for him at once. Soon after the doctor had left the practitioner came, and while he was giving me treatment I went to sleep and slept for some time. When I awoke it was to a new sense of life; I was rational, the disease gone, and I was free. I awoke with a smile and said, "I must have been asleep." The practitioner asked me if I did not want something to eat, and the nurse gave me some food, which I ate and was still hungry. That evening my husband on his return from business brought me a large basket of fruit, of which I ate freely.
On Saturday morning the doctor called again, only to find a happy, smiling face instead of the feverish one he had left the day before. He took my pulse and temperature and found them normal, stood at the foot of my bed and looked at me for quite a few moments, and then said, "This is beyond me: I guess my services are not required any longer." On Sunday I walked the length of our flat and back again; on Monday I dressed myself and baby, and when the doctor called to attend the nurse, who had burned her hand, he shook hands with me and congratulated me on my wonderful recovery. One week from that day I went to my practitioner's home, where I was received like an old friend. To me this meant a great pleasure indeed, for his wife and he both looked the picture of health and seemed so happy. The trip both ways was about twelve miles and it was a very cold day, but I felt much stronger both mentally and physically on my return home. The treatment was continued for about six weeks, off and on. All the old trouble for which I was to have the operation was healed, and my eyes, to which I had not given a thought, were also healed. Fourteen years before I had had two serious operations performed on them, and had worn glasses ever since, but last summer I was at the office of one of our best eye specialists, with a friend, and he examined my eyes and pronounced them normal. To-day I am a well and happy mother, doing my own work and caring for my three little ones. Words cannot express my gratitude to God, and to Mrs. Eddy. I feel like one that had been called back from the grave.
