PURE AND PRACTICAL CHRISTIANITY REINSTATED THROUGH CHRISTIAN SCIENCE
CHRIST JESUS , the purest and most spiritual man who ever lived, was constantly doing good. Through his correct understanding of God he was able to rise above every material condition,—to heal the sick, multiply the loaves and fishes, still the waves and winds, raise Lazarus from the dead, and finally to demonstrate eternal Life by his own resurrection and ascension. His teachings and life-work, understood and demonstrated, would long ago have fulfilled the prophecy of the coming of the reign of universal harmony. For three hundred years after his ascension his followers clung closely to his teachings, and in obedience to his commands they followed his example,—healed the sick and destroyed sin in all its forms. Thus Christianity spread throughout the whole of civilized Europe, and it became immensely popular. People then began to profess it from political motives, to gain worldly power and prestige, with the result that paganism and materialism crept in and became identified with it. the understanding of God became obscured, and spiritual healing was lost.
In response to the great and crying needs of sick and sinful humanity, and centuries of blind belief in God, pure and practical Christianity has been reinstated through Christian Science. It has afforded and is affording the proofs which Christ Jesus commanded. and through the Christian Science text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," the unadulterated spiritual interpretation of the Bible and the spiritual healing practised and taught by the Master and his disciples are clearly set forth and explained. This reinstatement of the Christ-ideal, discovered and given to the world by Mrs. Eddy, has done so much good, has restored to health so many hopeless invalids, that those who have received such benefits cannot be other than loyal and loving followers of their dear Leader. They are grateful indeed to her who, in the face of tremendous opposition and the attacks of malice and hatred, has continued for forty years to guard and guide this sacred movement.
The vast numbers who out of their great needs have turned to Christian Science, have received not only physical healing, but spiritual upliftment and mental transformation. It has given them an understanding of God as infinite Mind, Spirit, Life, Love, and of the true man as His spiritual image and likeness, His perfect spiritual reflection. It has taught them that God is "All in all" (Science and Health, p. 468), in whom "we live, and move, and have our being;" that evil is a mere negation, and sickness only a false mental claim. They have learned that to be well they must think right. This method of right thinking, or spiritual realization of God's allness and goodness, has overcome every known disease and false appetite. It has destroyed worry, fear, anxiety, and brought peace and satisfaction.
