Dayton (Ohio) News

Last spring the Christian Scientists in Ohio sought an amendment to this medical law, and the chief objection made by physicians was that Christian Scientists were unable to diagnose disease. Soon after this my attention was called to the healing of a baby in this city, through Christian Science. It had been sick for three months, and during this period had been under the care of seven physicians in Dayton (two specialists), representing various schools of medicine. They did not agree in their diagnosis and their treatment failed to relieve the little one's suffering. As a last resort the mother sought Christian Science treatment. In a few hours thereafter the baby was able to retain its food; the second night it rested well all night, and at the end of one week it was cured. Which is of the greater importance, diagnosis without healing, or healing without diagnosis?

Jesus Christ, the greatest physician ever on earth, healed the sick through spiritual means and not material. To those who criticised him, he said, "For which of those [good] works do ye stone me?" Must Christian Scientists be deprived of the rights of citizenship, the right of contract, because they heal the sick after material remedies fail? If Christian Scientists should turn their thoughts from God. Spirit, to the study of materia medica, they would no longer be Christian Scientists, and if a law making this compulsory were passed in any State, it certainly would be contrary to their rights of religious liberty as guaranteed by the Constitution of our country. ...

Each school of medicine has had to fight in the legislature for recognition. Was it not because the allopaths distrusted the homeopaths and other schools, and condemned their methods that they might have the monopoly? The medical fraternity is not ignorant of the healing efficacy of Christian Science, else they would not be seeking to bar Christian Scientists out by legislative means. By so doing are they not seeking to establish a monopoly?
