The Northwestern,

I see by your good paper of the 4th, that the Emmanuel Episcopal Church of Boston is to teach a class in "faith healing," and that the pastor has stated in this connection that Christian Scientists work their cures through hypnotism, and even Christ Jesus is charged with being nothing more than a very successful hypnotist. To my mind this is simply a reiteration of the charge of the enemies of Jesus, that "he casteth out devils through the prince of the devils." Christian Scientists would gladly welcome the re-establishment of true Christian healing in any denomination of the church ; but to go from drugs to hypnotism is no advance, and Christian Scientists most strenuously object to any attempt to impute the results of their treatment to hypnotism. Why are those who know practically nothing about Christian Science so ready to tell all about it? Surely no one is as capable of telling just what Christian Science is as the one who has studied it and shown his practical understanding of the subject by the application of its teachings in healing the sick, reforming the sinner, and reclaiming the infidel. Christian Science and hypnotism are in no way related, and it is my private opinion that the reverend doctor understands neither the one nor the other; for if he understood Christian Science he would be practising it as well as talking about it, and if he knew what hypnotism is he would not be teaching it or trying to introduce it into the Christian Church.
