If any person had told me a year ago that I would become a Christian Scientist, I would not have believed it, but I am grateful to God, and to our Leader, for the blessings I now enjoy through Christian Science. In July, 1905, I received a severe scald on my foot, which would have put me off work for weeks had I depended upon materia medica. On the third day after the accident my mother asked if I would like to have a Christian Science practitioner help me. I consented, and was back at work in two weeks. The physical healing was not all. For years I had been a hard drinker; would give up the habit for a while, only to return to it. I tried every kind of material remedy, but it was of no avail. Christian Science cured me of the appetite for drink in six days, and I have never had the least desire to return to it. I know I never can with the enlightment from the divine Mind and the new environment which the change has brought,—a happy mother, sisters, and the return of friends.

I was chef in a hotel when I was firs led to the study of Christian Science. Not only was I healed, but an ambition to be a better man was aroused, and most of all I desired to know and to obey the great and only power according to His laws. For over thirty years I had seemingly been in the power of strong drink and tobacco, but both of these were soon given up. Although my work calls me frequently to the bar, these very articles of enslavement make no appeal to me. My whole physique is rapidly undergoing that change of which Paul speaks,—transformation by the renewal of the mind. The effects of fatigue, exposure, and starvation in the Spanish-American war are disappearing, and I am also overcoming a very quick temper.

I hope this statement may do some good to any who may be down under the power of the liquor habit,—that it may help them to see the true light that leads us out of darkness into the brightness of Life, Love, and Truth. I cannot give praise enough to Christian Science for the good it has done me. Through Christian Science I have come to understand more clearly the Bible, and with "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, what seemed a hard problem is being solved.
