[Written for the Sentinel.]

Trusting

O Weary heart and steps that slow
Along life's pathway come and go,
Fear not, the Master trod alone
The thorn-path leading to a throne.

Though footsteps burdened be with years
Of ungained hope and bitter tears,
Fear not, nor shrink the rugged way,
It leads thee into perfect day.

Fix thy firm gaze upon the star
And nothing can thy gladness mar;
The thorns to roses turn, and bless
Thee with their loving, soft caress.

What though the shadows seem to fall
Dread o'er thy path and darken all;
O fearful heart! be still, and know
Love's lamp still burns with steady glow.

Deem not because this mortal mind
Doth thy true vision seem to blind,
That aught by either night or day
Can dim Truth's bright resplendent ray.
