A Reminiscence

Since coming into Christian Science I have often wished for "the pen of a ready writer" that I might express the gratitude I feel for the many blessings which have come to me through the understanding of Truth as revealed in our inspired text-book, Science and Health.

I live near the Mother Church, and from my windows there are beautiful views of it, and when I am alone, in the silent watches of the night, I can look across to this symbol of all that stands for Principle, and meditate upon the wonderful changes which have come into my life since I watched the building of this church from the foundation until the day when its finial was put in place.

While I listlessly watched the workmen, I little thought of the influence the beautiful tower with its chime of bells calling to meditation and prayer would henceforth have upon me when a few months later I should become a member of that church.—then unknown to me. Since then, through these nine years, with the exception of four weeks, this granite tower has been my daily companion. Through all the varying changes of light and shade it stands out a quiet monitor, sometimes in the moonlight, in sharp relief against a pale sky with a single bright star shining conspicuously above, reminding me that "the star of Bethlehem is the star of Boston" (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 320). I rejoice that I was born here and that I am privileged to be numbered among those who are taking part in this mighty movement of the ages. My thought always turns in deepest reverence and gratitude to our Leader, through whose night-vigils, self-sacrifice, and toil this has been made possible.

This beautiful gray tower has been the witness of many days and nights of struggle in my passage from anguish and despair to serenity of thought, until at last the unhappy, discontented woman whose tearful eyes first gazed so hopelessly upon its uprising, now surveys her transformation with awe, and having been brought into the haven where she would be, stands with eager feet and joyous heart, a faithful sentinel, awaiting the outspreading of its "walls sublime," and praying that she may always follow humbly and worthily in the path marked out for the guidance of the flock which ever look lovingly to the Mother Church.
