From our Exchanges

There are many lessons to be received from this Gethsemane of our Lord, and one among the many is this: If we mark well the history of moral greatness in all ages we shall see that it is made to stand in the midst of any and every Gethsemane of trial; and that the triumph on Olivet only foreshadows a universal victory of a kindred righteousness. It is a Gethsemane in which each one of us stands when inclination diverges from duty; when a lower love crosses the track of a higher; when a passion impinges to disturb the direct and free movement of a principle along its appointed path; when the Siren of temptation sings at one ear and the voice of God calls at the other. The pathway we shall make out of our Gethsemanes will be backward and downward or forward and upward, as the main drift of life is along the lower nature or the higher. The lesson of Gethsemane is this, again, that character is tested not only in our favorable moments, but also when it would seem that stress was laid upon us amid the most unfavorable environment.—The Universalist Leader.

I believe we are on the verge of a mighty revival of faith in a future life,—a faith which will make that life more real to men than it has been for many a day,—a faith so different from the old that it will come to men with the power of a new discovery. It will be based on evidence internal and evidence external that will satisfy at once the longing soul and the inquiring mind.
