Science and its Demonstration

Webster's definition of the word science is, "accumulated and established knowledge, which has been systematized and formulated with reference to the discovery of general truths or the operation of general laws: knowledge classified and made available in work, life." Perhaps the best definition of Christian Science that could be given in a few words would be the knowledge of Truth classified and made capable of being used in the problems of life.

In the Christian Science text-book, Science and Health, Mrs. Eddy, its author, has systematized and formulated the truths contained in the Bible, has explained God's laws and their operation in the destruction of sin, disease, and death so clearly that all may learn this Christ method and apply it to their daily needs, verifying Jesus' words, "He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also."

To-day we find many ready and willing to admit that Mrs. Eddy is an advanced thinker, and that her works contain many truths; but too many make the mistake of thinking that they can gain an understanding of Christian Science by reading other authors who have undertaken to write upon what they are pleased to call Mind-Science. Such persons fail to recognize the fundamental distinction and difference between Mrs. Eddy's writings and those of others: viz., that while the many portray high ideals, her writings alone reveal the Principle which, when understood and applied, makes these ideals possible of attainment. Christian Scientists are not satisfied with reading and dreaming, they are impelled to strive earnestly, intelligently, constantly to make their lives holier and better in every way. They are grateful to Mrs. Eddy because she has not only presented the mark of this "high calling of God in Christ Jesus," but has by her own demonstrations blazed a way which, if faithfully followed, will lead to the heights of spiritual overcoming.
