I was led to investigate Christian Science by a dear friend whom I had learned to trust when I was a child. When she found me I was hopelessly miserable. I had from childhood been afflicted with bilious attacks and nervous sick headaches, and as I grew, other diseases were added. When my friend sent me some tracts, I was suffering from nervous prostration, internal troubles, dyspepsia, and insomnia. I was so extremely nervous that the rustling of the pages of a newspaper would cause me intense suffering. For many years I had not eaten food that had a particle of white flour in it, and rarely drank anything but hot water. I could never ride or travel on the cars without suffering from car-sickness. I was also in constant dread of cyclones or tornadoes, keeping awake night after night in order that I might rouse the family and neighbors in time to escape to the cellar; but, thanks to Christian Science, all this has been changed.
By reading and studying a tract, which my friend had sent me, in the hope of discovering in its pages the wonderful healing power which she had told me was to be found in reading Christian Science literature, I learned that God is omnipresent Life and Love, and this was such a delight to me, that I found myself constantly dwelling on the words, "In the secret place of the most High;" and in less than two weeks I was picture of health and happiness.
I lost no time in securing a copy of Science and Health, and many times when I have seemed to fall back, my daughter would bring the "little book," and sitting beside me would read over and over the words which I had marked, "Be firm in your understanding that the divine Mind governs, and man should reflect His government," and "Man is never sick; for Mind is not sick, and matter cannot be" (Science and Health, p. 393). In a few moments I would be up, entirely free, and giving praise to omnipresent Love for the victory.
