"THE SWEET AMENITIES OF LOVE"

Throughout the writings of Mary Baker Eddy it is emphasized that the understanding and demonstration of divine Love are essential requirements in Christian Science healing. Mrs. Eddy's life, her teachings, and her establishment of the Christian Science movement were inspired by an unselfed love for humanity. She writes in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 113): "The vital part, the heart and soul of Christian Science, is Love. Without this, the letter is but the dead body of Science,—pulseless, cold, inanimate"

The Manual of The Mother Church, which was written by Mrs. Eddy for the guidance and protection of the members of her Church, includes "A Rule for Motives and Acts," which contains this arresting statement (Art. VIII, Sect. 1): "In Science, divine Love alone governs man; and a Christian Scientist reflects the sweet amenities of Love, in rebuking sin, in true brotherliness, charitableness, and forgiveness."

It is quite evident that it is the duty and privilege of every Christian Scientist to strive to understand and obey this Rule. The provisions of the Manual are not dictatorial demands or personal opinions, but are divinely inspired guides, impelled by God, divine Principle. As they are obeyed, they demonstrate Christian Science.
