HEREDITY NOT A LAW

[Of Special Interest to Young People]

When the writer was in her teens and just a new student of Christian Science, she told her Sunday School teacher about some of the fears that had tormented her all of her life. Her parents had come from two different European nations; so she had grown up with many of the hereditary beliefs of these two nations.

When she did something wrong or displayed a quick temper, she was often told that she inherited this from her father. When she was dictatorial or stubborn, she was told that these traits came from her mother's family. The writer seemed to herself to be a mixture of false beliefs, and more than once she wondered what her identity really was.

The teacher lovingly pointed out to her that she must never be afraid, because fear is the opposite of trust and confidence in God as All and the only power. The teacher also advised the writer to study all the references to heredity that she could find by using the Concordances to the Bible and to the writings of Mary Baker Eddy. The teacher assured her that in reality God was her only parent and that He was lovingly caring for her always.
