WEIGHING THE FACTS

One who would maintain a wholesome mental independence in these days of teeming publicity and propaganda should silently challenge the accuracy of questionable assertions which issue from the radio, television, and press rather than passively accept their unproved claims. Despite their obvious cultural and educational value, such media may sometimes promote bias, fear, or indifference through overemphasis and reiteration of disagreeable or material happenings.

The zealous endeavor of mortal mind to control human emotions is not new. The ancient prophets urged the people to choose good rather than evil. Isaiah indicated the just nature of the Messiah, who would come to bless mankind, by describing him as one who would "know to refuse the evil, and choose the good" (7:15). Christ Jesus was victor over aggressive arrogancy —sin, disease, and death. The Christ, the pure nature of God, which Jesus demonstrated, rightly inspires every true Christian to evaluate properly human experience in order to glorify God and nullify the intimidations of evil.

Mary Baker Eddy, whose teachings are consistent with the precepts of the Master, gives her followers enduring inspiration to attain Jesus' standards in order that they may be able to weigh the facts and separate the false from the true, the unreal from the real. "The human mind," writes Mrs. Eddy in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 155), "acts more powerfully to offset the discords of matter and the ills of flesh, in proportion as it puts less weight into the material or fleshly scale and more weight into the spiritual scale."
