In 1941, because of the long hours I had to work, I suffered a complete breakdown in health. For over three months I was in bed and lived on milk only. Finally, I decided to have the help of a Christian Science practitioner. After five days I fully recovered, and there was no period of convalescence. Shortly afterward I was examined by an Army medical board and was rated in first-class condition. Later, my desire to join a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, resulted in the healing of the smoking habit of twenty years' standing.

In 1954 I was involved in a motor accident. At the time I was seventy miles from my home, The words, "God is everywhere," came to my thought, and I switched off the engine the second before the car crashed. I did not lose consciousness, and I felt no pain. I asked that a friend in a nearby town be informed of the accident. This friend telephoned my wife, and she in turn telephoned a Christian Science practitioner some two hundred miles away and asked him to help me.

Two days after I had been taken to a hospital, X-ray photographs showed that I had several broken bones, including a cracked breast bone, and injuries to the right leg and left hip. The practitioner sent me daily messages, telling me that the real man is 100 per cent spiritual, 100 per cent perfect right now. At my own request I was having no medical attention; only nursing care was given.
