The old saying that "man's...

The old saying that "man's extremity is God's opportunity" proved to be true in my experience when I first learned of the teachings of Christian Science. At that time I was engaged in an expensive farming operation. Things were not going well with either the crop or me. It had been a dry season, and there was every indication of a crop failure. Because of my worry over the crop, I was on the verge of a nervous breakdown and could neither eat nor sleep. I was also suffering from a heart condition and from chronic constipation, which I had had for over thirty-five years and for which I had taken medicine almost daily during that length of time.

A sister-in-law who was a Christian Scientist visited me. While sitting on the veranda, I started to tell her how ill I was. She lovingly told me that if I would take up the study of Christian Science, I could be healed just as people were healed when Jesus was on earth. I gave her words a moment of thought and decided that I did not want to be rude; so I asked her to explain Christian Science to me. She talked for an hour. Then she showed me how to study the Bible Lessons in the Christian Science Quarterly and gave me the name of the nearest practitioner.

The following morning I drove the fourteen miles to the practitioner, and she very graciously spent about two hours further explaining Christian Science to me. I told her that if she would pray for me and tell me what to do, I would follow her instructions to the best of my ability. She loaned me a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and I honestly and sincerely took up the study of Christian Science. That day I discontinued both drinking liquor socially and using medicine. I have not taken a drop of either since.
