Since early boyhood I have had...

Since early boyhood I have had the strong desire to do good in the world. From the time I entered a Christian Science Sunday School, I have felt that to live this religion and prove its truth to myself and others is to do good in its highest form.

During the Second World War, when I was in the Navy, I received much help from Christian Science Wartime Workers. A Wartime Minister helped me prevent seasickness by asking me to consider myself as being in reality in rhythm with God's universe. My first three days at sea were during the roughest storm our ship ever encountered. Two thirds of the crew had never been to sea before, and seasickness was common among them, but I was completely free.

When I was in a unit whose assignments were frequently dangerous, I was again helped by a Christian Science Chaplain, who reminded me of Mrs. Eddy's statement (Science and Health, p. 450), "The Christian Scientist has enlisted to lessen evil, disease, and death." This Chaplain also assured me that only God affects and directs my life. This spiritual truth resulted in my receiving orders which always placed me in harmonious situations and utilized my abilities to my satisfaction.
