OUR TRUE VACATION

As the annual summer vacation season draws near may we give thought to the nature of this contemplated respite from the usual tasks of the day. It is good for us to withdraw on occasion from the humdrum of the workaday world for refreshment. But it is never of value to depart from our business of reflecting God, of expressing Love in all of our activities and relationships.

Jesus on several occasions went apart from the multitude that thronged him in order to refresh his concept of being. He found it essential in his ministry to go apart to commune with God. The Bible describes him as going "up into a mountain apart to pray" (Matt. 14:23). On one mountain journey, he took Peter, James, and John with him as his companions (see Matt. 17). On that inspiring occasion man's eternal identity was revealed to them when Moses and Elias appeared and talked with Jesus.

In the fourth chapter of John's Gospel it is reported that Jesus and his companions were traveling through Samaria when they came to Jacob's well near Sychar. We read, "Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well." But his resting period was one active in extending the truth to the woman who came to draw water. He spoke to her of the water of Life and of the true sense of worship of God in spirit. Even while, to human sense, he rested, he took the opportunity to preach Christ to a woman of another country who needed what he had to offer.
