LOVE'S ACTION

"God is love" (I John 4:16). With these simple words the beloved disciple makes it evident that Love is the infinite intelligence and power which govern the whole universe. In complete agreement with John, Christian Science teaches that Love is the everpresent, ever-operative divine Principle, which causes, constitutes, and controls all harmonious action. Furthermore, Christian Science reveals man to be the beneficiary of this action.

"Love cannot be a mere abstraction, or goodness without activity and power," declares Mary Baker Eddy on page 250 of "Miscellaneous Writings." Love is omniactive. Love purifies, uplifts, directs, maintains, supplies, and restores. Love's action is ceaseless, universal, filling all space. Love, being God, cannot harm; it can only bless. Love's action is irresistible, for Love is total power.

Of vital importance to humanity is the fact that the action of Love is always twofold. Love bathes all in beauty, while washing away ugliness. Love reveals wise steps to take, at the same time preventing folly and stupidity. Love glorifies holiness and perfection, while unseating sin and rebuking incompleteness. Love establishes joyous health, while ruling out sorrow and disease. Mrs. Eddy states in "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany" (p. 288), "Love unfolds marvellous good and uncovers hidden evil."
