MIND, THE MEDICINE OF SCIENCE

"SCIENCE not only reveals the origin of all disease as mental, but it also declares that all disease is cured by divine Mind." Mary Baker Eddy makes this statement in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p.169). Jesus healed all manner of disease, by seeing in Science the true selfhood of the individual instead of the mortal, which material sense would seem to portray. Jesus did not judge by the sight of his eyes, but by the light of spiritual understanding.

In the healing process, Christian Science does not start with discord or with pathology, but with Mind, or God, and His all-inclusive perfection. Health and disease are not actualities of matter but states of consciousness. It is more or less recognized that a thought can flush or pale the face, retard or accelerate physiological processes; but it is less generally acknowledged that all disease is thought externalized on the body.

"As [a man] thinketh in his heart, so is he," the Bible declares (Prov. 23:7), thus emphasizing the importance of thinking aright. Disease and inharmony originate in erroneous thought and false beliefs, and one function of Christian Science is to uncover by the dissection of thoughts the error to be excised. Or perhaps the difficulty lies in a generally held mesmeric belief, against which we have failed to guard ourselves. In either case, spiritualized thinking is the antidote.
