At an early age I became impelled...
At an early age I became impelled by a great desire to know the truth. As I grew older, I sought it in intellectual studies, but neither philosophy, psychology, science, literature, nor logic provided a satisfactory answer to the riddle of human existence. I continued the search with ever-increasing discouragement, frustration, and finally hopelessness until I was in college, and I felt I could no longer go on.
At this time a young girl who was a Christian Scientist came to live in our home, and in conversation with my mother she explained some of the teachings of her religion. As a result my mother asked me if I would go to see a Christian Science practitioner. Indifferently I consented, more out of intellectual curiosity and to please my mother than for any other reason. When the practitioner explained what God is as taught in Christian Science, I became firmly convinced that this Science was the truth I had sought so long, for it set forth divine Principle by which I could live and by which the problems of human existence could be solved. So confident was I that this was true that I asked for Christian Science treatment for a physical disorder, and it was healed in a few days.
From my earliest recollection, my mother had suffered from severe nervous headaches, which could be relieved only with sedatives. As a little girl I had said to myself, "If Jesus were here, he would heal my mother." Very shortly after I began my study of Christian Science, my mother had one of these attacks and asked me to help her in Science.
