DESTROYING THE ROOT OF EVIL

The Psalmist placed pleasure on a spiritual basis when he said of the children of men (Ps.36:8), "They shall be abundantly satisfied with the fatness of thy house; and thou shalt make them drink of the river of thy pleasures."

The pleasures of Spirit demand no material sensation, but rather a cessation of it. True pleasures come from God, and they cause human thought to lose interest in sensuousness of every degree. Spiritual pursuits actuate one's love of God and have the effect of revivifying life and leading one on to deeper spiritual experiences. Doing good, manifesting the power of intelligence and wisdom and justice, gives pleasure which the material senses cannot estimate.

One can easily see that sin depends largely upon the belief that there is pleasure in matter. And pleasure in matter depends upon the belief that there is sensation in matter. But Christian Science discloses the fallacy of these beliefs; it explains that material sensation is delusion, for matter has no sensation, and only a deluded mentality can believe that it has. Consequently one must be in a state of delusion before he can seem to enjoy sensations which are not where they seem to be, or before he can even seek such sensations.
