Early in my study of Christian Science I was healed of the alcohol and tobacco habits. For several years after this healing I would not admit to others the real reason I did not use these false stimulants. When asked, I would find some excuse to change the subject or just laugh off the matter.

Then I remembered Christ Jesus' command in the Sermon on the Mount (Matt. 5:16), "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven." With this instruction in mind I decided thereafter to state fearlessly that the reason I did not drink or smoke was that I had been healed of these habits in Christian Science. Before long I had an opportunity to do so.

I was being interviewed for a new position that presented a wonderful opportunity. While I was lunching with the senior partner of the firm, he offered me both liquor and tobacco. When I said, "No, thank you," he asked my reason. I said, "I am a Christian Scientist, and we are taught to rely on God alone for our satisfaction and poise."
