Only those relying on infinite Love can appreciate genuine freedom from fear. Mary Baker Eddy states in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (pp. 391, 392), "Fear is the fountain of sickness, and you master fear and sin through divine Mind; hence it is through divine Mind that you overcome disease." How forcibly this has been proved to me!

About twenty-seven years ago, shortly after I was married, I asked my wife to accompany me on one of my daily business trips. We had not gone far before I was seized with a severe pain in my right side which I feared might be appendicitis, since it conformed to descriptions I had heard of this type of suffering. I asked my wife to drive the car and to take me to a doctor's office. My wife, who had been a student of Christian Science for several years, did not offer Christian Science to me then, but as we drove along she made several firm declarations of truth, of which I understood very little at that time.

After waiting in the doctor's office for quite a long time, I began to feel somewhat better. And since the doctor still had not come in, we decided to go home and return later if necessary. I am grateful to say that it was not necessary and that there never has been a recurrence of the difficulty. My wife's impersonal work of beholding the perfect man of God's creating had healed me of whatever the difficulty may have been. However, it was not until some years later that I took up the study of Christian Science.
