In Psalms we read (107:15, 20)...
In Psalms we read (107:15, 20): "Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men! ... He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions."
When I was but a child, my mother was healed of acute gastritis through reading Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. Her reliance on Christian Science extended throughout the rest of her life. I remember her reading aloud to me from the Bible and from Science and Health when she put me to bed at night, and as a result I always felt a great sense of peace and calm.
Four years ago I suffered an injury in which the ligaments of the right leg were badly torn. Also, the leg was believed to be fractured just below the hip. A member of the family, wanting to do the loving thing from his point of view, offered to send me to a hospital and provide a private room for me, but I begged to remain at home and was allowed to do so.
A few nights later while alone I had a sense of fear that I might always be a cripple, and I asked God to deliver me from such an experience. Then I realized that since the real man is perfect, I need have no fear of being a cripple. My healing was not a quick one, but I was growing all the while through prayerful thinking and spiritual understanding, which enabled me to realize that in truth man walks with God. At the time, I could not walk or stand alone, but I took the necessary mental steps to purify and spiritualize my thinking. Later I was able to attend church services, and, shortly after, I resumed my duties on our literature distribution committee. Before long the healing was complete.
During this time a passage from Science and Health meant much to me (p. 495): "When the illusion of sickness or sin tempts you, cling steadfastly to God and His idea. Allow nothing but His likeness to abide in your thought. Let neither fear nor doubt overshadow your clear sense and calm trust, that the recognition of life harmonious—as Life eternally is—can destroy any painful sense of, or belief in, that which Life is not." This healing was brought about through the loving help of Christian Science practitioners, who worked for me at different times, and a clearer understanding of the truths given in Science and Health.
Another healing was that of a heart attack. I had allowed myself to be influenced by the publicity given this disease over the radio and in the newspapers. For the immediate help given by a Christian Science practitioner who was close by at the time, I am very grateful.
Other healings I have had through Christian Science include those of severe headaches, effects of accidents, and a condition which I believe would have been diagnosed as bronchial pneumonia. Some of the healings came through my own understanding of the spiritual power of Truth, and others came through the help of Christian Science practitioners.
I wish to express gratitude to God for these healings, for membership in The Mother Church and a branch church, and for class instruction, with its continual unfoldment of the truth of being as taught and demonstrated in Christian Science.—(Mrs.) Calla Chatfield Joslin, Santa Monica, California.
