THE MORNING MEAL

In the experiences of the crucifixion and the resurrection Jesus demonstrated the great power of divine Love to sustain men under all circumstances. Nothing but Love could do this, the Love which governs and permeates all existence with its pure affection and power. It is well to recognize the fact that Jesus' mission was twofold. His purpose was not merely to save himself from the designs of evil men. It was much more than this.

Mary Baker Eddy makes it clear to us that Jesus could have withdrawn himself from his enemies and surrendered a human sense of existence. He could have enjoyed his spiritual identity as an idea of divine Love without going through the experience of the cross and tomb. But had he done so, the significance of his entire mission would have been lost to mankind.

The Way-shower's purpose was to prove for the benefit of all men that every effort of mortal mind to kill him and to destroy his mission must come to nought. By going through the experience on Calvary and proving that man's life is the expression of Spirit, divine Love, he showed mankind the way to the kingdom of heaven—to the recoginition and enjoyment of man's spiritual identity. His final decision to let his enemies attempt to kill him was made while his disciples slept and while Judas was on his way to betray him to his enemies. His decision was inspired by his unchanging love for God and man.
