Activities for the Armed Services

[The following accounts of service personnel have been received by the Armed Services Department and are now shared with the Field.]

Georgia

An infantryman wrote Christian Science Activities for the Armed Services substantially as follows:

"While at work one morning, some friends and I were indulging in horseplay. In the middle of our boisterousness the telephone rang, and I was called to answer it. The next thing I knew I was lying on my bunk in the barracks. One of my friends had struck me on the head with an entrenching tool. Although he hit me in fun and intended the blow to be light, it was severe enough to knock me unconscious.

"Immediately I tried to reach the Christian Science Minister for the Armed Services but was unsuccessful. Then I recognized that I must scientifically work for myself. After realizing that there are no accidents in the divine Mind, I commenced to read the Bible and 'Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures' by Mary Baker Eddy. In a few minutes I fell asleep. At luncheon time I awoke, dressed, and proceeded to the mess hall. I was not as strong as I thought I was, and I fainted after leaving my barracks.

"Later I succeeded in communicating with the Christian Science Minister. Together he and I began declaring the unreality of error and the allness of God, good. We vigorously affirmed the truths from Science and Health that accidents are not known to God and that "under divine Providence there can be no accidents, since there is no room for imperfection in perfection" (p. 424). In accordance with the textbook, we realized that man is not material and that his strength does not exist in brain, blood, bones, and physical structure, but in God, who is the only power. Soon the fear thoughts began to disappear.

"Many remarks were made that a serious condition might develop. Therefore the Minister and I needed constant alertness to deny these suggestions and the laws of materia medica. We also denied the belief that a material diagnosis was necessary. Throughout the experience we clung to the truth that man is spiritual, not material. Within a few days every discordant manifestation disappeared.

"One evening while talking with the Minister I expressed my gratitude for the healing, but that very night there seemed to be a recurrence of the headaches. The next morning I called the Minister, and we earnestly realized that no demonstration of Christian Science could be reversed, that no medical law could affect man, and that no thoughts about what I should have done or should not have done had power to harm me.

"We recognized these thoughts of well-meaning friends as ignorant malpractice. By impersonalizing them and realizing the allness of the one Mind, God, we were able to destroy every sense of animosity and resentment. Within a few days I was well, and I am grateful to say that the healing has been permanent."

Korea

A Chaplain reported that a young man had confessed his great fear of a social disease which he seemed to have contracted through breaking the moral law. Some of his physical functions were not normal, and there were evidences of the disease on his body. The Chaplain immediately took up work based on these words from Science and Health (p. 404): "If the evil is over in the repentant mortal mind, while its effects still remain on the individual, you can remove this disorder as God's law is fulfilled and reformation cancels the crime."

Although Christian Science treatment checked a spread of the symptoms, it did not at first remove the fear that the disease might be operating unseen or be in a dormant state. Therefore the Chaplain did some vigorous, audible work which was followed by the silent recognition of the superiority which each of the synonyms for God has over its opposite. In another day the young man passed a physical examination without a trace of the disease. The most important part of his healing was his moral awakening and regeneration.

Massachusetts

A mother wrote Armed Services Activities substantially as follows:

"During this Thanksgiving week I wish to express my sincere gratitude and thankfulness to your department. A little over a year ago I notified you of my son's great need for help. He was in a Veterans' Hospital, having just returned from Germany after an absence of a Year and a half. The doctor said the case was serious and predicted hospitalization for five or six months at least.

"Your department contacted a Christian Science Minister, who quickly visited my son. For the comfort, encouragement, and help the Minister gave him, I shall be ever grateful. My son was discharged from the hospital in five weeks instead of the predicted five or six months. Two of the doctors expressed their amazement at his quick recovery and gave Christian Science full credit for it. The belief was nervous breakdown and attempted suicide. Today my son is well and happy and is leading a very active life."
