Today, some twenty years after...

Today, some twenty years after my parents enrolled me in a Christian Science Sunday School, I wish to express my gratitude for and testify to the innumerable blessings and healings that I have experienced through the study and application of Christian Science.

In an often-quoted sentence in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mary Baker Eddy states (p. 233), "Every day makes its demands upon us for higher proofs rather than professions of Christian power." It was not until I was in the Navy during World War II, however, that I realized this to be true. Separated from parental protection, I faced the challenges of many and varied problems by prayerfully studying Science at every opportunity.

In one instance I walked away unhurt from a wrecked jeep in which I had been riding and which overturned when a front wheel struck a rock. On another occasion I was healed of a serious fever. I was able to avoid the use of all medicaments and to place my reliance solely on the healing power of Truth. In a few days I was declared wholly free from the fever, and I was discharged from the Navy sick bay.

Attendance at universities offered many other opportunities to prove that all true intelligence and all true knowledge come from God and that man, God's reflection, can be controlled and governed by but one Mind. Concomitantly, I realized that to express God, not to impress mankind, was an important prerequisite to academic achievement.

I was studying during an examination week several years ago when a severe inflammation manifested itself in and around one ear. Although this condition increased in severity, a routine schedule was maintained. When the pain and inflammation increased to a degree that made eating and hearing almost impossible, a long-distance telephone call was made to a practitioner. His reassuring words and citations from the writings of our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, were wonderfully helpful. Almost instantly the discordant condition abated. I was able to listen to the telephone conversation with either ear, and a complete healing was received in a few hours. The examinations for which I had been studying were passed with high grades.

I am most grateful for each experience that has afforded an opportunity to progress Spiritward. Membership in The Mother Church, the privilege of participating in Christian Science Organizations on university campuses, Sunday School, and subsequent branch church membership have all been of great benefit to me. A visit at the Sanatorium of the Christian Science Benevolent Association on the Pacific Coast for the purpose of rest and study brought me much happiness and comfort. Class instruction and the annual association meetings have also been grand privileges. I am profoundly grateful to our revered Leader for giving us an ever-available and ever-workable divine Science, and to the Christian Science practitioners, upon whom we may always call to assist in our demonstration of the fact that "Truth is always the victor" (Science and Health, p. 380). —Donald George Rhodes, Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
